This article was very interesting for me, especially being a fan of Susan Sontag. She immediately compares interpretation to pollution in a way that i can relate to. Sometimes i feel that our society over analyzes art work and expects a lot more "content" then what is put on the wall. The more Sontag writes about content the more her strong point of view that stressing content on work actually hinders the art. I agree, that sometimes when we overanalyze a painting or any piece of artwork for that matter, we loose the innocence of that painting. When it comes to my artwork, i feel sometimes the more i explain my process, ideas, concept, the physical piece of art gets lost in other peoples interpretations of what i'm saying or what i could have said. Being "against interpretation" is something that we should all consider, even though the act and process of interpreting is so stressed upon us. "What is important now is to recover our senses. We must learn to see more, to hear more, to feel more."We should always know how to explain our work, but we shouldn't always be able to explain another artist work. Instead, it is important to use our senses when it comes to viewing art. It is important to feel a piece more then explain it.
3 questions about the article:
-how would this article compare to her more recent articles today?
-does susan sontag disagree with most critics interpretation of mainstream art today?
- what art does she enjoy?
